Ben Brown Fine Arts is delighted to announce Vik Muniz: Brushstrokes, the first exhibition of the artists bold and highly experimental Brushstrokes series at our London gallery. This new body of work extends Muniz’s longstanding exploration of visual perception, materiality, and the mechanics of image-making. In Brushstrokes, he turns to the very building block of painting – the brushstroke – reconstructing canonical images from the Impressionist and Post-Impressionist traditions through intricately layered photographic collages.
The series draws upon the works of Vincent van Gogh, Joaquín Sorolla, Henri Matisse, Claude Monet and Pierre-Auguste Renoir – painters who, between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, revolutionised pictorial language. Impressionism and its successors rejected academic rigidity in favour of perceptual immediacy, capturing the fugitive effects of light, motion, and atmosphere. These artists did not describe the world through line and contour, but evoked presence through colour – applied in loose, expressive marks that conveyed not exact likeness but lived sensation.
Muniz mines this history, reconstructing their compositions with sculptural swathes of paint – photographed, collaged, and reconstituted into works that oscillate between fidelity and fabrication. Look closely, and each mark is distinct: thick ribbons of ultramarine, ochre, or carmine. Stand back, and the image resolves with startling clarity – a sailboat skimming sunlit water, a still life of fruit, a dappled garden scene. The illusion is complete, yet the means of construction remain nakedly visible.

Ben Brown Fine Arts is pleased to announce SURFACES, our fifth solo exhibition at the Hong Kong gallery of internationally acclaimed artist Vik Muniz. The exhibition features new works from Muniz’s most recent series, Surfaces, which explores concepts of perception, reality, representation and materiality. Based on extensive research of iconic works by Cubist and 20th century masters including Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris, Paul Cézanne, Fernand Léger and Giorgio Morandi, Muniz creates these unique works using a hybrid technique of photographing handcrafted, three-dimensional elements – most notably painting and collaged components – and reprocessing them through photographic collages. The Surfaces works invite the viewer to question what lies beneath the surface and explore the dichotomy between the physical object and its depiction, stimulating and expanding the expectations of one’s visual repository.

Museo Universidad de Navarra, Spain
October 18, 2023 – March 1, 2024

Museo Universidad de Navarra presents the solo exhibition Vik Muniz: Flora Industrialis, on view October 18, 2023, through March 1, 2024.

Inspired by the engravings and drawings of the 19th century albums of Latin American flora from the Museum University of Navarra’s Collection, Flora Industrialis presents the results of Muniz’s project with the Museum’s Tender Puentes artistic residency program.

In the late 17th century, explorers were accompanied by artists and scientists who patiently and carefully recorded the findings of each trip. These sketchbooks became volumes of expeditions and treasures. Muniz used them as inspiration to create a new flora, a “Flora Industrialis” that questions our approach to reality in a technological world of various representations.

Following his work process and his constant innovative use of diverse materials as artistic elements, Muniz transforms a handful of artificial flowers into a delicate botanical catalog of his invention captured in beautifully crafted photographs. An unexpected journey through a botanical universe is born from his own creativity.

A decades long fascination with the relationship between photography, memory, and the mental image has been the foundation for much of Vik Muniz’ work, which utilizes a staggering array of everyday materials and objects to re-create art historical images, taking their final form as photographic prints. In two recent series, Handmade and Surfaces, Muniz applies various hand interventions on his photographs, blurring the line between the “real” and the documentation – returning to an early interest in combining a “thing” with its photographic representation.

In the pieces on view in this exhibition, from the Surfaces series, Muniz reimagines work from several Cubist artists – Maria Blanchard, Georges Braque, Juan Gris, Fernand Leger, Jean Metzinger, Pablo Picasso, and Diego Rivera – employing a layered and iterative process of collaging, photographing, and hand manipulating. The final unique pieces are a seductive combination of folds, cuts, and objects alongside their photographed counterparts, leaving the viewer the enticing task of unpacking their expectations of the surface of an artwork.

Ben Brown Fine Arts is pleased to announce FOTOCUBISMO, the gallery’s fourth solo exhibition in the London gallery of internationally acclaimed Brazilian artist and photographer Vik Muniz, opening this April.

Exhibited for the first time in the United Kingdom, FOTOCUBISMO features work from Muniz’s most recent Surfaces series, which explores concepts of perception, reality, and representation while challenging traditional notions of materiality. Muniz’s work often draws inspiration from iconic images from art history. Looking to Cubist masters such as Pablo Picasso, Juan Gris and Georges Braque, these unique works are a result of the artist’s hybrid technique of photographing handcrafted, three-dimensional elements – most notably painting and collaged components – which are reprocessed through photographic collages. Muniz’s newest works invite viewers to question and explore what lies beneath the surface, and to dissect each layer amidst the overlapping interventions.

These abstract studies compel the viewer to closely investigate the dichotomy between the physical object and its depiction, while at the same time reinventing the possibilities and questions around the construction of a photographic image. This exploration of iconic images from art history, which Muniz has repeatedly revisited throughout his career, furthers the artist’s investigations into the contradictions between visual perception, the physical world and art historical context.
