Lugar Comum is a project by Vik Muniz located at the São Joaquim Fair in Salvador, Bahia. With four annual exhibitions, the project aims to democratize access to contemporary art and bring the public closer to important names in the art world. In a kind of negotiation with public art, the initiative aims to bring the characteristic white cube of art galleries to unexpected places

Escola Vidigal

Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

Perched on the stone face of the iconic Morro dois Irmãos in Rio de Janeiro, the Escola Vidigal is a school of art, design and technology for local children living in Rio’s Favela Vidigal. The school is a project envisioned and built by artist Vik Muniz and has as its core the concept of Visual Literacy. All classes and programs are free of charge and are recorded so that the message of each singular effort can be replicated and disseminated.

The school is comprised of two structures, that are woven into the existing homes on a steep section of the hill and separated by a walkway and bridge.

The buildings were conceptualized in much the same way as other buildings in the favela, to be practical, logical, simple and respectful of its surroundings. In the process they have also become transformative

Lampedusa is a floating installation to be launched during the 56th Venice Biennale. For this public artwork, Vik Muniz employs his traditional use of unlikely materials and scale manipulation to generate wonder from predictability. Contextualized in the naval environment of Venice, Lampedusa is an effigy of a paper boat built to scale of one of the town’s traditional vaporettos. Boats of all kinds are a common sight in Venice but a forty-five feet paper boat will certainly disrupt the viewers’ impression of being part of a postcard.

– a chirp from a bird

– an on-line posting of 140 characters or less

For many the definition of tweet, a chirp from a bird, still has the same kind of

meaning – instant communication that is very brief.

In New York City we witness more and more pedestrians striding through life

with heads buried in gadgets. We tweet, we text, we email on the go. Children

wave iPhones, androids and DS’s from their strollers and car seats. The simple act

of looking around as we go about our daily journey is being lost to an ever more

fragmented and hectic contemporary society.

Tweet asks us to pause, reflect, and remember a simple act that is available to

everyone. Look around you and enjoy the view.

This exhibition presents the work of contemporary artists alongside original

Audubon prints, paintings from CMA’s permanent collection and a changing

participatory work made by visitors. All result from a similar starting point – that of

careful observation of nature, specifically of birds. To identify and study at great and

near distances, with quiet observation and in fleeting moments – this kind of looking

is encouraged by these works.

The exhibition will draw from the work of John James Audubon, Joy Episalla, Gail

LeBoff, Amy Jean Porter, Vik Muniz, Fred Tomaselli, Katheryn Spence, Hunt Slonem,

Emilie Clark, Tamar Mogendorff, Laurel Roth, Nina Boesch, Sarah Hardesty and the

CMA permanent collection.

THIS LECTURE IS AT CAPACITY AND WE ARE NO LONGER TAKING RESERVATIONS.

ANY UNCLAIMED SEATS MAY BE TAKEN AT THE START OF THE LECTURE.

Rio de Janeiro- and Brooklyn-based artist Vik Muniz has exhibited his work all over the world.

Using unexpected materials to create portraits, landscapes, and still lifes, which he then photographs, Muniz delights in subverting the viewer’s expectations. To quote The New York Times critic Vicki Goldberg, “Vik Muniz’s work tells us that seeing is not quite believing, that perceiving and understanding are balancing acts, that experience itself is a see-saw. . .” Join us for a lecture by the artist in which he provides insight into his artistic concerns and practice.

This lecture is the twenty-fourth in the series made possible
through generous gifts by Louis and Lois Fingerman.

by Vik Muniz

In the series Pictures of Ink, I tried to make the viewer aware of the materiality of the printed medium by blowing up a hand made rendering of a well known image. The hand made rendering was done in thick ink and photographed while still wet.

The result is a confusing moray of conflicting information. Both the photographed ink and the recognizable image playing against each other, making it hard for the viewer to simply recognize something unless he or she thinks a bit more. In my perception, immediate recognition works like short hand for an otherwise richer, more intelligent and intense visual experience. The interactive nature of these works is meant to inspire thoughts about vision, recognition and perception in general rather than simply be something to be seen.

The dot matrix was used to accelerate the dissemination of images through the printed media. By reproducing it dot by dot by hand, I turn the technique into a subject itself. A subject that co-exists precariously with the recognizable portrayed celebrity in the picture. This negotiation of attention is controlled by walking closer or away from the picture. In the case of a relatively narrow corridor, the game of finding who is in the picture becomes more intense, not to mention that the dots will infinitely be multiplied in the reflections of the pictures in front.
